Brief History of Zugliget Chairlift Budapest
For 50 years, since 1970, Zugliget Chairlift Budapest (or as locals call Zugligeti Libegő), Hungary's first passenger cableway, has been transporting passengers. The plans for the first cable railway were drawn up by. István Hantos designed the first cableway cable cars in 1933 on János Hill, the highest point of Budapest, which is particularly popular with tourists and skiers, and is also very popular for its Elisabeth Lookout. The idea was well received, but its realisation was decades away, partly due to the war.
Back in 1967, the idea of a cable car in Budapest was brought back to life by the XIIth district. Drawing on earlier visions, plans were carefully laid out, and the perfect location was chosen. By March 1969, construction began, and just a year and a half later, a brand-new way to glide above the city was ready to welcome its first passengers.
Most of the building materials came from Hungary’s own industry, but the sleek suspension chairs and the specialized wire rope arrived from Austria, adding an international touch to this local dream. From several possible designs, the decision-makers chose a simple yet charming solution - an open, two-person chair that offered nothing between you and the fresh air but the sky itself.
To support and transport the cableway, 17 steel racks were erected. The electric motor required for operation was installed at the upper station. In case of failure, a petrol engine (Trabant 601, later a Lada 1300) was used as a replacement. Passengers were allowed to board the 101 open, paired hammock chairs (102 was used as a repair chair) on the move, which covered the distance between the two stations in 12 minutes.
The opening ceremony was held on 19 August 1970 for guests and on 20 August 1970 for the travelling public, who were able to take possession of the cableway, which covered a distance of 1,040 metres and a difference in level of 262 metres. Initially referred to as the Zugligeti or János Hill cableway, the new means of transport was chosen from around 10,000 suggestions in a public competition and christened with the name "Libegő" (floating), which is still used today.
