History of the Budapest Tropicarium

The concept of Tropicarium originated from Károly Farkasdi, a Hungarian businessman residing in Sweden. Along with his family, he created and introduced the distinctive content that Budapest Tropicarium offers in 1990 at Kolmården and in 2000 at Budapest. The zoo exhibits an impressive collection of freshwater fish, which includes indigenous wildlife, tropical fauna, and a vast array of marine species.

Visitors can marvel at hundreds of different animal species across eight rooms, complete with exceptional facilities, such as stingray viewing and a tropical rain exhibit. Starting in September 1999, an intensive eight-month construction project was undertaken to establish the Tropicarium Oceanarium. Finally, on May 26, 2000, the doors of one of Central Europe's largest marine aquariums opened in the impressive Campona Shopping Centre on the outskirts of Budapest.

Spanning nearly 3000 m², the Budapest Tropicarium stands as an impressive addition to the city's attractions.Several hundred tons of concrete and iron were utilized during the construction of the Tropicarium. Alongside this, special high-tech filtration and cleaning equipment, as well as advanced IT systems, were installed to ensure seamless operation. Furthermore, Tropicarium's technicians personally crafted the majority of the exhibit's decorations by hand.
